The words ‘This’ and ‘That’ are important parts in the verbal form of any language. Let us see how to say these in Telugu.

 

To ask a question in Telugu, we add an ‘aa’ sound at the end of an object, denoted by ‘aa’.

 

For Example – Idhi gaalipatam means This is a kite, but to make it a question you ask Idhi gaalipatamaa? Which means Is it a kite? Note that ‘aa’ is added to the object ‘gaalipatam’.

 

Applying the suffix ‘aa’ to the object turns the statement to a question. This suffix changes depending on the ending syllable of the object. Few examples are given below to understand this better.

 

*When a word ends in ‘m’,’l’,’n’, then the syllable ‘aa’ is added to it.

Pusthakam – Pusthakam+ aa – Pusthakamaa

Gaalipatam – Gaalipatam +aa – Gaalipatamaa

 

* When a word ends in ‘u’, then the syllable ‘aa’ is added to it.

Eanugu – Eanugu + aa – Eenugaa

Chettu – Chettu + aa – Chetta

 

* When a word ends in ‘di, then the syllable ‘di’ is replaced

with ‘daa’  .

Gadi – Gadi + aa – Gadaa

Pandi – Pandi + aa – Pandaa

Avunu, Idhi oka gaalipatam.

అవును, ఇది ఒక గాలిపటం.

 

No. That is a pen.

Ledu, adhi oka kalam.

లేదు, అది ఒక కలం

 

No, it is a tree.

Ledu, idhi oka chettu.

లేదు, ఇది ఒక చెట్టు

 

 

Yes, this is a ball.

Avunu, idhi oka banthi.

 అవును , ఇది ఒక బంతి .

 

This is my mom.

Idhi naa/maa amma

ఇది నా /మా  అమ్మ

Naa/maa amma pearu ______

నా /మా  అమ్మ పేరు _____________.

 

That is my elder brother.

Adi naa/maa anna.

అది  నా /మా  అన్న  .

Naa/maa anna peru ____________

నా /మా  అన్న పేరు  ________

For possessive form of the nouns such as Father’s, Mother’s etc., the suffix – ‘Vaalla’ can be added to the noun.

Examples- Father’s – naanna+vaalla– naannavaalla
